Distributors rarely fail because they picked a bad product. They fail because they picked a good product in the wrong slot — a high-margin item where the market wanted volume, or a commodity where their channel actually needed differentiation. A working assortment balances three dimensions at once: how fast it moves, how much margin it carries, and how often the same customer buys again.
This article builds a distributor assortment from real UnivFitness catalogue data. Every model number, material, size, MOQ and price below exists in the catalogue. Where a price is listed it is an indicative FOB wholesale price; several made-to-specification SKUs are quoted on request because cost tracks raw material markets. Freight, duty and any indicative retail figures are estimates and illustrative only — always confirm with your own landed-cost quotation.
UnivFitness is a Chinese manufacturer operating Wholesale & OEM Only with MOQ from 1,000 pcs, FOB Shanghai, a 30-day lead time, 30% advance + 70% before shipment, free samples (sample cost refunded against the bulk order), inspection before and after production with a per-order inspection report, and OEM covering custom colours, logo and private-label packaging. Logo methods differ by material: `mould` for cast iron and painted goods such as UV11101, `1C printing` for latex and soft-surface goods such as UV43101 and UV61501.
The three-dimension framework
Before the product lists, the decision rule. Score every candidate out of three, and only stock lines that are strong in at least one dimension and acceptable in the other two.
| Dimension | What it really measures | Typical UnivFitness examples |
|---|---|---|
| Velocity | Units sold per month per SKU | UV43101 band ($1.13), UV20801 EVA mat ($1.48), UV40627 ab roller ($3.71) |
| Margin | Gross profit per line after landed cost | UV10201 neoprene dumbbells, UV21001 TPE mats, UV81316 eight-station ($3,800) |
| Repeat / consumable | Re-order frequency from the same buyer | UV43101 bands, UV21001 mats, UV61501 ab mats ($3.44) |
A band wall is the classic contradiction: a $1.13 unit that builds repeat business because gyms and studios consume bands. An eight-station machine is the opposite: one sale, maybe two a year, but $3,800 of top-line per unit. Both belong in a distributor portfolio — in different proportions.
Tier 1: Volume drivers under $4 FOB
These are the products that keep a warehouse moving. They fill cartons, justify container space, generate cash flow and cross-sell into higher-value lines. They are also the lines where your landed cost per unit decides whether you win, so freight density matters more than unit price.
| Model | Product | Key specification | MOQ | Indicative FOB price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UV50709 | Finger massager | Hand recovery accessory | — | $0.42 |
| UV71301 | Sun visor / cap | Outdoor & promo accessory | — | $0.80 |
| UV43101 | Latex power resistance band | 208 × 0.45 cm; 10 levels (0.64 / 1.3 / 1.9 / 2.2 / 2.9 / 3.2 / 4.4 / 4.5 / 6.4 / 8.3 cm) | 1,000 pcs | $1.13 |
| UV50704 | Neck massager | Recovery accessory | — | $1.56 |
| UV20801 | EVA yoga mat | EVA construction | — | $1.48 |
| UV70709 | Ankle support / brace | Support accessory | — | $2.37 |
| UV20803 | EVA yoga mat | EVA construction | — | $2.62 |
| UV70101 | Training glove | Entry glove line | — | $2.91 |
| UV70118 | Training glove | Fitness glove | — | $2.98 |
| UV61501 | Ab mat | PVC + sponge, 30 × 38 × 7 cm | 500 pcs | $3.44 |
| UV41907 | Chest expander | Chest / upper-body trainer | — | $3.36 |
| UV42503 | Pedal resistance band | Pedal trainer format | — | $3.36 |
| UV40627 | Ab roller | Core trainer | — | $3.71 |
| UV42502 | Pedal resistance band | Pedal trainer format | — | $3.70 |
Three of these deserve specific attention.
UV43101 is the anchor SKU of the whole Tier 1 group. Ten calibrated resistance levels, listed explicitly from 0.64 cm through 8.3 cm width, means you can sell a single band to a beginner and a set of ten to a physiotherapy clinic. It packs five pieces to a colour card at 40 × 28 × 28 cm, roughly 0.031 CBM per card — dense enough that freight is negligible relative to value. This is the SKU to lead with when you are opening a new account.
UV61501 ab mat at $3.44 with a 500-piece MOQ is one of the few sub-$5 items with genuine repeat behaviour. Gyms replace ab mats. Studios replace them faster. The 30 × 38 × 7 cm PVC-and-sponge format is a known quantity for buyers, which shortens the sales conversation.
Gloves: UV70101 at $2.91 versus UV70118 at $2.98. Two price points 7 cents apart in the same category is not redundancy — it lets you run good/better merchandising or serve two customer tiers without cannibalising one listing.
Tier 2: Core revenue, roughly $4–$18 FOB
This is where distributor gross profit actually gets made. Units are meaningful enough to carry real margin, cheap enough to be a considered-but-fast purchase, and physical enough that shipping cost becomes part of the negotiation.

| UV21109 | Cork yoga mat | Cork surface mat | $9.61 |
| UV13904 / UV13905 | 30 kg black painted barbell sets | Studio barbell sets | $40.55 / $43.16 |
Two families here carry most distributor profit.
Dumbbell sets. The ladder from UV11402 at $4.53 through UV11101 ($10.94), UV11001 ($11.64), UV11302 ($11.91), UV11201 ($12.23) and UV11104 at $17.42 lets you merchandise the same shelf in three finishes and two weights. That ladder is the whole point: it gives your retail buyer a good/better/best story and gives you three different margin points without leaving the category. UV11101’s carton — 20 sets at 101 × 87 × 98 cm — is the one to quote on for freight planning, since it is lighter per CBM than most people expect.
Yoga mats. UV21001 TPE covers 173 × 61 cm across eight thickness options from 0.3 to 1.0 cm, which is enough to service both the travel-mat buyer and the studio buyer from one SKU family. Above it, UV21108 combines cork with TPE at 183 × 61 × 1 cm with eight weight options from 400 g to 1,370 g and an indicative FOB price of $11.48 — the premium, eco-positioned listing that lifts the average selling price of the whole mat wall. For buyers who want neoprene and vinyl dumbbells rather than iron, UV10201 (vinyl round head over cast iron, 0.5/1/2/3/4/5 kg) and UV10208 (neoprene hex, 1–5 kg) round out the light end.
Tier 3: High-ticket lines above $100 FOB
High-ticket equipment changes your business model. You stop being a box-mover and start being a project supplier — which means quoting, installation guidance and after-sales. Margin per unit is larger, but so is the working capital tied up in each order.
| Model | Product | Indicative FOB price | Buyer profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV81471 | Vertical knee raise / dip station | $240 | Studios, home gym buyers |
| UV80874 | 45° linear leg press | $840 | Commercial and semi-commercial clubs |
| UV81494B | 3D Smith machine | $1,076 | Main strength anchor for new clubs |
| UV81313 | Cable cross-over / jungle station | $2,200 | Clubs expanding cable capacity |
| UV81321 | Five-station multi gym | $2,600 | Mid-size clubs opening on a budget |
| UV81316 | Eight-station multi gym | $3,800 | High-throughput commercial clubs |
| UV13705 | 132 kg rubber Olympic bar & plate set | $180.47 | Platform packages, PT studios |
| UV13703 | 300 lb rubber Olympic set | $208.26 | Commercial platform sets |
| UV13704 | 310 lb coloured rubber Olympic set | $250.99 | Colour-coded premium zones |
Individual heavy dumbbells belong here too. UV10801 — rubber hex over cast iron with a chromed steel handle, offered in rubber, TPU and PEV coating grades, 2.5–50 kg, MOQ 1,000 pcs — and UV10601, painted cast iron hex in the same 2.5–50 kg span, are quoted per order because cost follows steel and rubber markets. For UV12301 / UV12302 vinyl-dipped cast iron kettlebells, 4–32 kg with a 1,000-piece MOQ, the same logic applies. Sales cycles are long, order values are high, and re-orders are predictable once a club standardises on your brand.
Assortment matrix by channel
Do not push the same mix into every channel. The table below is an illustrative planning matrix; adjust to your market.
| Channel | Tier 1 share | Tier 2 share | Tier 3 share | Lead SKUs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online marketplace | 60% | 35% | 5% | UV43101, UV20801, UV61501, UV40627, UV70118 |
| Specialty retail chain | 40% | 50% | 10% | UV11101/UV11302 sets, UV21001 mats, UV13101 kettlebells, UV10201 dumbbells |
| Gym & studio supply | 25% | 40% | 35% | UV10801 run, UV61001 balls, UV81321, UV81494B |
| Importer / private label | 30% | 55% | 15% | UV10201, UV21001, UV43101 with custom packaging |
| Corporate & promo gifts | 75% | 20% | 5% | UV71301 ($0.80), UV50709 ($0.42), UV42903 loops |
The logic is simple. Marketplaces punish heavy goods because your customer sees the delivered price; bricks-and-mortar retail needs the finishing ladder that dumbbell sets provide; projects reward whoever can quote a complete club package.
Inventory and cash strategy
Let 1,000-piece MOQs teach you something. With MOQ from 1,000 pcs as the site-wide baseline, Tier 1 SKUs are cheap to trial: 1,000 pieces of UV43101 at $1.13 is about $1,130 of goods, while 1,000 pieces of nothing in Tier 3 is even remotely comparable. Use Tier 1 to test demand, then commit capital to Tier 2.
Plan to CBM, not to cartons. Ask for carton dimensions and pieces-per-carton on every line before you finalise quantities. UV43101 at five pieces per 40 × 28 × 28 cm card is dense; UV21001 mats and UV20801 EVA mats are bulky and low-density. Mixing at least one dense anchor per container is the cheapest freight decision you will make all year.
Illustrative margin check. If UV43101 lands at $1.13 FOB and you add freight and duty, your landed multiplier decides the retail price — not the FOB price. Run the landed-cost calculation per CBM and per kg separately, because some goods bill on volume and others on weight. Any numbers here are illustrative estimates only; use your own forwarder quote.
Re-order rhythm. Tier 2 and Tier 3 should be ordered to project, not to stock. Tier 1 should be ordered on a calendar, because the cost of a stock-out in a $1.13 consumable line is the loss of the whole basket.
Private label: where the margin actually comes from
Wholesale-only distribution competes on price and eventually loses. The UnivFitness OEM programme covers custom colours, logo and private-label packaging, which is how you convert a commodity into a brand.
- Cast iron and painted goods such as UV11101 take a logo by `mould` — permanent, and ideal for building a house brand that survives in a gym for a decade.
- Latex and soft-surface goods such as UV43101 bands and the UV61501 ab mat take `1C printing`, which suits colour-led brand blocks and multi-colour band sets.
- Mats such as UV21001 (eight thickness options) and UV21108 can be specified to your own size, colour and packaging before production.
Start with one Tier 1 SKU and one Tier 2 SKU in your own packaging. Request free samples first — the sample cost is refunded against the bulk order — and check them against the inspection report that ships with every order.
