Most “start a brand” articles are written by marketers who have never booked a production slot. This one is written from the other side of the table. UnivFitness (www.univfitness.com) is a China-based fitness equipment factory supplying wholesale and OEM only — we do not sell single units, and we do not compete with our own buyers on Amazon.
That changes what “starting a brand” means. You are not dropshipping: you are committing to a minimum order quantity, a 30-day production window, a logo method and a packaging print run. Everything below is built on real commercial terms and real SKU data.
—
What “starting a brand” actually costs you in commitments
Before you pick a product, understand the five commitments you are making. They are the same for a first-time Amazon seller and for a distributor building a house brand.
| Commitment | UnivFitness standard | What it means for a new brand |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum order | MOQ from 1,000 pcs (lower on some soft goods: sit-up mat UV61501 at 500 pcs, neoprene kettlebell UV13101 at 500 pcs; cork + TPE mat UV21108 at 1,004 pcs) | Your first cheque is inventory, not sampling. Plan cash around MOQ × unit price. |
| Trade term | FOB Shanghai | You own freight, duty and last mile; your landed-cost model starts here. |
| Lead time | 30 days | Artwork and packaging must be locked before the clock starts. |
| Payment | 30% advance + 70% before shipment | Roughly a third of merchandise value at confirmation, the balance before release. |
| Quality control | Inspection before and after production, inspection report with every order | Two control points — put acceptance criteria in writing before the first. |
Two things also work in your favour: samples are free, with the sample fee refunded against your bulk order, and OEM covers custom colours, your logo and private-label packaging — so what ships under your brand is genuinely yours.
—
Step 0: Pick an entry category (and use the catalogue depth to plan line extensions)
We run 13 categories. The SKU count in each tells you two things: how much choice you have at launch, and how much room you have to extend later.
| Category | SKUs | Launch note |
|---|---|---|
| Strength & Home Gym | 772 | Highest unit values (UV81494B $1,076). Second phase. |
| Dumbbells & Barbells | 213 | Classic entry; freight-heavy, permanent demand. |
| Foam Rollers & Yoga Accessories | 131 | Basket builders. |
| Yoga Mats | 82 | Material, thickness, finish and print all differentiate. |
| Jump Ropes | 77 | Low unit cost, easy to bundle. |
| Resistance Bands & Tubes | 43 | Cheapest entry; lightest freight. |
| Agility & Balance | 50 | Niche, loyal buyers. |
| Hand Grips | 35 | Cheap, high repeat purchase. |
| Gym Balls | 32 | Bulky; freight dominates. |
| Ankle & Wrist Weights | 32 | Compact, pairs well. |
| Ab Rollers | 31 | Single-function hero (UV40627 $3.71). |
| Hula Hoops | 30 | Seasonal — test only. |
| Push Up Bars | 21 | Simple, cheap to private label. |
Launch with one to three SKUs in one category. Extend into the deep categories after your first reorder.
—
Step 1: Choose a launch profile and shortlist SKUs
Three profiles cover almost every new brand we work with. All figures are indicative FOB wholesale prices on real SKUs.
Profile A — “Small parcel, fast feedback” (Amazon FBA / own-site start)
| SKU | Product | Indicative FOB wholesale price | MOQ | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UV43101 | Latex power band, 208 × 0.45 cm, 10 resistance levels (0.64 / 1.3 / 1.9 / 2.2 / 2.9 / 3.2 / 4.4 / 4.5 / 6.4 / 8.3 cm) | $1.13 | 1,000 pcs | Lowest-risk entry; 1C printing logo; one SKU family, ten levels. |
| UV43002 | Latex resistance tube | $1.80 | 1,000 pcs | Bundle partner to the band. |
| UV42502 | Pedal resistance band | $3.70 | 1,000 pcs | Differentiated form factor. |
| UV61501 | Sit-up mat, PVC + sponge, 30 × 38 × 7 cm | $3.44 | 500 pcs | Half the usual MOQ; 1C printing logo. |
| UV40627 | Ab roller | $3.71 | 1,000 pcs | Evergreen single-function hero. |
| UV70118 | Training gloves | $2.98 | 1,000 pcs | Add-on with repeat purchase. |
Profile B — “Core category, defendable margin” (dumbbells)
| SKU | Product | Indicative FOB wholesale price | MOQ | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UV11104 | 15 kg black painted cast iron dumbbell set | $17.42 | 1,000 pcs | Higher ticket, less price-shopped. |
| UV11101 | 10 kg black painted cast iron set (1.25 kg × 2 + 2.5 kg × 2, bar diameter 25 / 28 / 30 mm, 350 mm chromed bar, spring collars) | $10.94 | 1,000 pcs | The volume anchor; spec sheet records Logo: mould. |
| UV11302 | 10 kg rubber set (star collars) | $11.91 | 1,000 pcs | Step-up tier above UV11101. |
| UV11402 | 10 kg cement set | $4.53 | 1,000 pcs | Price-fighter for marketplaces. |
Profile C — “Premium / studio positioning”
Cork carries a material story that supports a premium price: UV21108 cork + TPE, 183 × 61 × 1 cm (400–1,370 g across eight tiers), $11.48, MOQ 1,004, logo by 1C printing — with UV21109 at $9.61 and UV21105 at $18.75 as a two-tier cork range. Add UV13101 neoprene kettlebell (1–5 kg, neoprene + sand + NBR foam, MOQ 500).
—
Step 2: Write the spec sheet before you ask for a quote
The biggest cause of a delayed first order is a vague enquiry. “10 kg dumbbell set” is not a spec. This is the level of detail that gets an accurate quote on the first reply:
For an individual hex dumbbell: pick cast iron UV10601 or rubber + chromed steel UV10801, and for UV10801 choose the coating tier — rubber / TPU / PEV are three distinct options. Both platforms cover 2.5–50 kg. Then state the exact weights you want, quantity per weight, your accepted weight tolerance (in the PO, not in a chat message), colour, logo route (cast iron and painted finishes take mould), and packaging.
For a coated light dumbbell: UV10201 vinyl + cast iron round head in 0.5 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 kg; UV10208 neoprene + cast iron hex 1–5 kg; UV10108 vinyl + cast iron hex 1–5 kg; UV10302 PE + sand plastic hex 1–5 kg.
For a yoga mat: pick the material first — TPE (UV21001 173 × 61 cm, 0.3–1.0 cm in eight tiers; UV21002 two-colour 700–1,520 g; UV21003 camo; UV21007 alignment lines 183 × 61 × 0.6 cm; UV21009 suede 183 × 68 × 0.6 cm), NBR (UV20901 180 × 60 × 1.0 cm, 800–1,200 g; UV20903 in 0.8 / 1.0 / 1.2 / 1.5 cm), PVC (UV20701 honeycomb; UV20703 1,580–2,000 g; UV20708 hot-stamped; UV20711 suede), EVA (UV20801 $1.48, UV20802 $4.03, UV20803 $2.62) or cork (UV21105 $18.75, UV21109 $9.61) — then fix the thickness tier and target gram weight.
—
Step 3: Sampling — treat the sample as a contract, not a gift
Samples are free, and the sample fee is refunded against your bulk order. Use that to lock acceptance criteria. Order at least two units of anything you plan to sell — keep one as your golden sample and send the second to your 3PL so labelling problems surface before 1,000 units land.
Checklist for every sample: weight on a calibrated scale against the marked weight; coating adhesion (rubber / TPU / PEV on UV10801, vinyl or neoprene coatings), including odour; colour against your Pantone reference under neutral light; logo legibility at arm’s length; fit and function (spring collars on UV11101, star collars on UV11302, bar diameter against your stated 25 / 28 / 30 mm); packaging fit and drop resistance; markings — barcode scannability, weight legibility, country-of-origin text.
Photograph every sample next to a ruler. Those photos become your QC reference in the inspection report.
—
Step 4: Logo and packaging — decide now, not after production
Two decisions must be locked before the 30-day clock starts, because both run in parallel with the goods.
Logo method. We run two: mould (a cast/formed mark for cast iron and painted finishes — the UV11101 spec sheet records “Logo: mould”) and 1C printing (single-colour printing for latex and soft surfaces — used on the UV43101 power band, the UV61501 sit-up mat and the UV21108 cork + TPE mat). Cast iron and painted dumbbells take mould; yoga mats, resistance bands and sit-up mats take 1C printing.
Packaging format. Four formats are available, each mapped to a product type:
| Format | Used for | Pack-out | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed carton | Dumbbell sets (e.g. UV11101) | 20 pcs/ctn | 101 × 87 × 98 cm, 11 kg |
| Color card | Latex power bands (UV43101) | 5 pcs/ctn | 40 × 28 × 28 cm |
| PP bag | Sit-up mat (UV61501) | 50 pcs/bag | 77 × 38 × 32 cm |
| Color poster | Cork + TPE yoga mat (UV21108) | 84 pcs/ctn | 52 × 40 × 63 cm |
Launch a dumbbell set plus a resistance band and you are running two print jobs — budget the artwork time.
—
Step 5: Trial-order economics — the real cash numbers
What the first order actually costs, using real indicative FOB wholesale prices and real MOQs. Merchandise values only — excluding packaging print, any tooling, freight, duty and marketplace prep.
| SKU | Indicative FOB wholesale price | MOQ | Merchandise value at MOQ | 30% advance due at order | 70% balance before shipment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UV43101 latex power band | $1.13 | 1,000 | $1,130.00 | $339.00 | $791.00 |
| UV61501 sit-up mat | $3.44 | 500 | $1,720.00 | $516.00 | $1,204.00 |
| UV40627 ab roller | $3.71 | 1,000 | $3,710.00 | $1,113.00 | $2,597.00 |
| UV11101 10 kg cast iron set | $10.94 | 1,000 | $10,940.00 | $3,282.00 | $7,658.00 |
| UV21108 cork + TPE mat | $11.48 | 1,004 | $11,525.92 | $3,457.78 | $8,068.14 |
| UV21109 cork mat | $9.61 | 1,000 | $9,610.00 | $2,883.00 | $6,727.00 |
A resistance-band entry costs about $1,130 in merchandise at MOQ — cheap enough to run as a genuine test. A dumbbell-set entry ties up roughly $10,940, of which $3,282 is due before anything is made. Choose your entry SKU by the cash you can park for 30+ days, not by the margin on a spreadsheet.
Heavy machines — UV81494B $1,076, UV81471 $240, UV81321 $2,600, UV81316 $3,800, UV81313 $2,200 (indicative FOB wholesale prices) — are quoted and configured per project.
—
Step 6: The 30-day production clock
Once the deposit clears and artwork is locked, this is the sequence:
| Window | What happens | Your action |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Order confirmed, 30% advance received | Lock artwork files and packing instructions in writing |
| Days 1–3 | Material and component prep | Submit your QC addendum if not already attached to the PO |
| Pre-production | Inspection before production | Review findings; raise changes now, not later |
| Production run | Mass production | No changes — late requests restart parts of the schedule |
| Post-production | Inspection after production | Ask for photos of packing, markings and carton condition |
| Before release | Inspection report issued, 70% balance paid | Release goods to your forwarder |
| Handover | FOB Shanghai | You own freight, duty and last mile |
The 30 days only hold if artwork is locked at Day 0. Every week spent revising a dieline is a week added to the calendar.
—
Step 7: From trial order to a container programme
Use the pack-out data to plan your second order — that is where freight economics change.
| SKU | Pack-out | Cartons / boxes at MOQ | Cube at MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV11101 dumbbell set | 20 pcs/ctn, 101 × 87 × 98 cm, 11 kg | 1,000 pcs → 50 cartons | 50 × 0.861 m³ ≈ 43.1 m³ |
| UV43101 power band | 5 pcs/ctn, 40 × 28 × 28 cm | 1,000 pcs → 200 boxes | 200 × 0.031 m³ ≈ 6.3 m³ |
| UV61501 sit-up mat | 50 pcs/bag, 77 × 38 × 32 cm | 500 pcs → 10 bags | 10 × 0.094 m³ ≈ 0.9 m³ |
| UV21108 cork + TPE mat | 84 pcs/ctn, 52 × 40 × 63 cm | 1,004 pcs → 11.95 ≈ 12 cartons | 12 × 0.131 m³ ≈ 1.6 m³ |
1,000 dumbbell sets fill roughly 43 m³ of cube; 1,000 resistance bands fill around 6 m³. Metal goods hit volume limits before weight limits, so your freight quote — not your unit price — decides whether the category works. Ask your forwarder to quote volumetric weight, and confirm carton gross weight against the inspection report.
Once you have a repeat pattern, run a mixed container: metal goods for ticket value, soft goods (bands, mats, gloves, ab rollers) for cube efficiency.
—
Mistakes that kill first orders
- Splitting MOQ across too many colours. Six colours at 1,000 pcs each is 6,000 units. Start with one or two.
- No weight tolerance in the PO. Unwritten acceptance criteria leave the inspection report nothing to measure.
- Starting artwork after production begins. Packaging print runs in parallel — late artwork delays shipment, not just the box.
—
Where to start
Limited cash and no freight experience: start with UV43101 ($1.13, MOQ 1,000) plus UV61501 ($3.44, MOQ 500) — both take 1C printing, so no tooling decision, and both ship light. Freight experience and cash to park: start with UV11101 ($10.94) or UV11302 ($11.91) at MOQ 1,000. Either way, sample first, lock artwork before Day 0, and write your acceptance criteria into the PO.

Ready to build your range?
Send us your shortlist — even if it is only a category and a target price — and we will confirm which SKUs fit, the logo method for each (mould or 1C printing), the packaging format, the MOQ, and the indicative FOB wholesale price.
Samples are free and the sample fee is refunded against your bulk order. Production runs 30 days from FOB Shanghai, with inspection before and after production and an inspection report with every order, on 30% advance + 70% before shipment.
