How to Source Dumbbells from China: Material Selection, Supplier Screening, and Per-kg vs Per-set Quotation

Cast iron dumbbell - source dumbbells from China

Dumbbells look like the simplest product in the fitness catalogue. They are not. Behind a single “10 kg dumbbell” enquiry sit at least six different material and construction routes, three coating grades, two collar systems, four quotation methods and a freight profile that can swing your landed cost by 30%. Importers who treat dumbbells as a commodity end up with the wrong product for their market, or the right product at an uncompetitive landed cost.

This guide is written for wholesale buyers and distributors sourcing free weights from China. It covers how to choose the construction, how to screen a supplier, how quotation actually works, and what to check before release. All models, materials, weight ranges, MOQs and prices below are real data from UnivFitness, a Chinese fitness equipment manufacturer operating Wholesale & OEM Only with MOQ from 1,000 pcs, FOB Shanghai pricing and a 30-day lead time.

Step 1: Choose the construction before you choose the supplier

Price follows construction, and construction follows the end user. Here is the full fixed-dumbbell range:

Model Construction Weight range MOQ Best-fit buyer
UV10601 Cast iron hex, painted 2.5–50 kg 1,000 pcs Commercial and value retail; lowest cost per kg
UV10801 Rubber hex over cast iron, chromed steel handle; coating grades rubber / TPU / PEV 2.5–50 kg 1,000 pcs Commercial gyms and premium retail; floor protection and noise
UV10201 Vinyl round head over cast iron 0.5 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 kg 1,000 pcs Aerobics, studio and light home use
UV10208 Neoprene hex over cast iron 1–5 kg 1,000 pcs Home fitness and colour-coded retail sets
UV10108 Vinyl hex over cast iron 1–5 kg 1,000 pcs Price-point retail in the light range
UV10302 PE hex, sand filled 1–5 kg 1,000 pcs Entry-level and promotional programmes

Three decisions matter most.

Cast iron vs coated. UV10601 is the cheapest route to heavy weight, and the standard for commercial racks up to 50 kg. The trade-off is noise and floor damage. UV10801 wraps cast iron in rubber (or TPU or PEV) with a chromed steel handle, which costs more but is what commercial operators specify.

Hex vs round. Hex heads do not roll — that is the whole argument. Round-head vinyl (UV10201) survives in studio and aerobics channels where weights are racked and carried rather than dropped on a floor.

Coated-light vs solid-heavy. The 1–5 kg coated segment (UV10201, UV10208, UV10108, UV10302) is a different business from the 2.5–50 kg segment. Different buyer, different packaging, different channel, and often a different season. Do not assume one order serves both.

Step 2: Understand what is inside the “10 kg set” category

Most importers start with a 10 kg set, because it is the highest-velocity retail configuration. Five different 10 kg sets exist, and they are not variations of one product:

Model Specification Collar Indicative FOB wholesale price
UV11402 10 kg cement set — $4.53
UV11101 10 kg black painted cast iron set, 1.25 kg × 2 + 2.5 kg × 2, 350 mm chromed bar, bar diameter options 25 / 28 / 30 mm Spring collars $10.94
UV11302 10 kg rubber cast iron set, 1 kg × 4 + 2 kg × 2 Star collars $11.91
UV11001 10 kg grey hammer-tone set — $11.64
UV11201 10 kg chrome set — $12.23

The price spread from $4.53 to $12.23 is not a negotiation range — it is five products. The $4.53 cement set is a price-point item for markets where weight accuracy expectations are looser. The $12.23 chrome set is a finish-driven retail product. In between, UV11101 and UV11302 differ in plate configuration (1.25 × 2 + 2.5 × 2 versus 1 × 4 + 2 × 2) and collar type (spring versus star).

Always specify the plate breakdown in your RFQ. “10 kg set” alone will get you quoted on whatever the factory has in stock.

Above 10 kg, the range continues:

Model Product Indicative FOB wholesale price
UV11104 15 kg black painted set $17.42
UV10906 32 lbs vinyl / neoprene set $20.39
UV13904 30 kg black painted barbell set $40.55
UV13905 30 kg black painted barbell set $43.16
UV13606 20 kg adjustable pump set $25.94
UV13605 20 kg adjustable pump set $26.21
UV13705 132 kg rubber Olympic set $180.47
UV13703 300 lb rubber Olympic set $208.26
UV13704 310 lb colour rubber Olympic set $250.99

The Olympic segment is where the freight and the value both concentrate. A $180–$251 set changes your container economics completely — you are shipping fewer, higher-value cartons, and you should model the container on carton data requested per model rather than on an average.

Step 3: Per-kg quotation vs per-set quotation — get this right or you cannot compare quotes

This is the single most common source of confusion in free-weight sourcing, and it causes importers to accept bad prices.

Fixed dumbbells are quoted per piece or per kilogram. When a supplier says “UV10601, $X/kg”, the price scales with weight. Your 2.5 kg unit and your 50 kg unit do not cost the same in material, but they may share a per-kg rate because the foundry cost is driven by iron. Ask explicitly:

  • Is the quoted price per piece or per kg?
  • If per kg, is it based on net weight or gross weight?
  • Does the rate hold across the entire 2.5–50 kg range, or does it step at certain sizes?
  • Is coating priced as a flat upcharge or as a percentage?

Sets are quoted per set. UV11101 at $10.94 is a set price, not a per-kg price — and $10.94 for 10 kg is roughly $1.09 per kg of iron, which is not comparable to a per-kg fixed-dumbbell rate, because the set includes a bar, collars and retail packing.

The trap: comparing a per-kg cast iron rate to a per-set retail price and concluding one supplier is 40% cheaper. You are comparing a bare casting to a packaged retail product.

Use this conversion discipline in your RFQ:

  1. Request every quote as per piece, with the piece weight stated.
  2. Request the per-kg equivalent as a second column.
  3. Request the carton quantity, carton dimensions and CBM so you can compute freight per unit.
  4. Compare landed cost per kg at your warehouse, not unit price at the factory.

For reference, real carton data for UV11101: 20 pcs per carton, carton 101 × 87 × 98 cm (0.861 CBM), set weight approx. 11 kg. In a 20 ft container at roughly 28 CBM, that is about 32 cartons and 640 sets. Freight per set on that lane is a straightforward division — do it before you sign.

Step 4: Screen the supplier with dumbbell-specific questions

Generic supplier vetting is not enough for free weights, because the failure modes are physical. Ask these:

Foundry and weight accuracy

  • How do you control weight tolerance across a 2.5–50 kg range?
  • Are castings shot-blasted and primed before coating, and what is the coating thickness?
  • How often are scales calibrated, and is weight checked on the finished piece or at the casting?

Coating

  • For UV10801, what are the differences between the rubber, TPU and PEV grades — hardness, odour, abrasion resistance and cost?
  • Is the handle chromed steel inserted into the head, or over-moulded? What is the pull-out strength?
  • For neoprene (UV10208) and vinyl (UV10201, UV10108), what is the seam treatment and what happens after six months of use?

Bar and collar

  • What bar diameters are available (25 / 28 / 30 mm for UV11101)?
  • Spring collars versus star collars — what is the cycle life of each?
  • Is the bar plated or painted, and what is the plating thickness?

Branding

  • What logo process applies? On cast iron and painted surfaces it is mould — as used on UV11101. On soft surfaces it is 1C printing — as used on UV43101 and UV61501.
  • Can you do custom colours and private-label packaging, and what is the artwork lock date?

Terms

  • Is the MOQ 1,000 pcs per model?
  • Is pricing FOB Shanghai and is lead time 30 days from deposit and confirmed specification?
  • Is payment 30% advance and 70% before shipment, released against the inspection report?

A genuine manufacturer answers all of these in one email. A trader forwards them.

Step 5: Read the catalogue structure as evidence of capability

Dumbbells & Barbells is a 213-product line within a 13-category, 1,549-SKU catalogue. That depth matters for three reasons:

  1. It proves the coating capability. Six coating routes — paint, rubber, chrome, vinyl, neoprene, PE — under one roof means the factory invested in each line.
  2. It lets you consolidate. A strength order that includes dumbbells, the 772-product strength line, yoga mats and resistance bands fills a container properly.
  3. It gives you a growth path. Start at 10 kg sets, move to Olympic sets, then to adjustable pump sets (UV13605 / UV13606) as your market matures.

Related lines that share the free-weight buyer:

Adjacent line Models Why it belongs in the same container
Neoprene kettlebells UV13101 (1–5 kg), UV13102 (2–6 kg), UV13301 (2–10 kg), UV13302 / UV13303 (2 / 4 / 6 / 8 kg) — MOQ 500 pcs Same retail buyer as coated dumbbells
Vinyl-dipped kettlebells UV12301 / UV12302, cast iron + vinyl, 4–32 kg — MOQ 1,000 pcs Same commercial buyer as UV10601
Kettlebell set UV13201, 6 lb × 2 + 3 lb × 2 — MOQ 500 pcs Entry set, same channel as 10 kg dumbbell sets
Wall ball / training bag UV61001 ($17.19), UV61202 ($40.00) Functional training channel
Training gloves UV70118 ($2.98) High-margin filler

Step 6: Sample, inspect and release

Standard terms: free samples, with the sample fee refunded on the bulk order, and inspection before and after production with an inspection report on every order.

Sample across the range, not one size:

  • UV10601: weigh a 2.5 kg, a 10 kg, a 20 kg and a 50 kg unit. Check paint coverage on the hex flats and edges.
  • UV10801: check the handle-to-head joint under load, and check coating odour — TPU and PEV behave differently from standard rubber.
  • UV10201 / UV10208 / UV10108: flex the coating at the seam and check for lifting; confirm colour consistency across a full size run.
  • UV11101: assemble and disassemble the spring collars repeatedly; confirm the plate breakdown matches the specification (1.25 kg × 2 + 2.5 kg × 2).
  • UV11302: confirm the star collars seat properly on the 1 kg and 2 kg plates.

Then make the inspection report a contractual release condition for your 70% balance. Require pre-production material and logo approval, in-process weight checks, and final AQL sampling with photographs.

Step 7: Build the order around freight, not around the unit price

Cast iron is the densest thing in your catalogue and the cheapest per kg. That creates a specific planning problem:

  • A container of only UV10601 heavy dumbbells may hit the payload limit before it fills the volume. Confirm the payload cap for your lane with your forwarder — do not assume 28 CBM is usable.
  • A container of only light coated dumbbells (1–5 kg) will fill the volume long before it reaches the weight limit, so you are paying to ship air.
  • The fix is a mixed order: heavy cast iron for value, light coated and accessory SKUs for volume fill.

Model both scenarios before you order. Ask for carton data on every model in the order, compute total CBM and total weight, and price the freight against both constraints.

Common sourcing mistakes

  1. Comparing a per-kg casting rate to a per-set retail price.
  2. Ordering “10 kg set” without specifying plate breakdown or collar type.
  3. Buying cast iron for a market that expects rubber-coated.
  4. Assuming the MOQ is per order rather than per model — on this programme, MOQ from 1,000 pcs applies at model level unless a model states otherwise.
  5. Skipping the 50 kg end of the sample range because the 10 kg looked fine.
  6. Paying the balance before seeing the inspection report.

Source dumbbells from a factory that will quote in your units

Dumbbell sourcing rewards specificity. Name the model, the material, the coating grade, the plate breakdown, the collar, the logo process and the carton requirement — and you will get a quote you can build a business on. Ask for “dumbbells” and you will get someone else’s leftover stock.
