Nobody can tell you what your store will cost without knowing your city, your rent and your tax regime. What can be calculated precisely is the part most founders get wrong: the purchase cost of the inventory itself. This article does that calculation with real UnivFitness wholesale prices, then layers on the other cost blocks with clearly-labelled estimates you must replace with local quotations.
A rule before we start. Every model number, size, MOQ and price below is real catalogue data, and every price is stated as an indicative FOB wholesale price. Every figure relating to freight, rent, duty, wages and margins is an estimate or illustrative planning figure only — use your own forwarder, landlord and accountant numbers for the actual decision.
UnivFitness supplies Wholesale & OEM Only, MOQ from 1,000 pcs, FOB Shanghai, 30-day lead time, 30% advance + 70% before shipment, free samples with the sample cost refunded against the bulk order, inspection before and after production with an inspection report per order, and OEM covering custom colours, logo and private-label packaging (logo `mould` for cast iron and painted goods such as UV11101; `1C printing` for latex and soft-surface goods such as UV43101 and UV61501).
The seven cost blocks of opening an equipment store
| # | Cost block | How to estimate it | Reliability of the number here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Opening inventory (FOB) | Sum of unit price × quantity | Calculable from real prices |
| 2 | Freight, duty & clearance | Carton dimensions → CBM → container; duty at local rate | Estimate only |
| 3 | Rent, deposit & utilities | Local market quotation | Replace with local figures |
| 4 | Fitout, racking & POS | Depends on format and size | Replace with local figures |
| 5 | Staff | Local wages × headcount × months of runway | Replace with local figures |
| 6 | Launch marketing | Depends on channel | Replace with local figures |
| 7 | Working-capital buffer | Typically several months of fixed costs | Estimate only |
Blocks 1 and 2 are the ones this article can help with in detail. Everything else is market-specific, and any number printed in a supplier article would be guesswork.

Mid-price — sets, mats, balls and recovery
| Model | Product | Indicative FOB price |
|---|---|---|
| UV11402 | 10 kg cement dumbbell set | $4.53 |
| UV42904 | Patterned loop band | $4.67 |
| UV21001 | TPE yoga mat, 173 × 61 cm, 8 thickness options 0.3–1.0 cm | Quote on request |
| UV13101 | Neoprene kettlebell 1–5 kg | Quote on request (MOQ 500 pcs) |
| UV10201 | Vinyl round-head dumbbell 0.5–5 kg | Quote on request (MOQ 1,000 pcs) |
| UV11101 | 10 kg black painted cast iron set | $10.94 |
| UV21108 | Cork + TPE mat, 183 × 61 × 1 cm | $11.48 (MOQ 1,004 pcs) |
| UV11302 | 10 kg rubber dumbbell set | $11.91 |
| UV11201 | 10 kg chrome dumbbell set | $12.23 |
| UV61001 | Wall ball / medicine ball | $17.19 |
| UV10906 | 32 lb vinyl / neoprene set | $20.39 |
| UV13606 | 20 kg adjustable pump set | $25.94 |
| UV13605 | 20 kg adjustable pump set | $26.21 |

High-ticket — plate sets and machines
| Model | Product | Indicative FOB price |
|---|---|---|
| UV81471 | Vertical knee raise / dip station | $240 |
| UV13705 | 132 kg rubber Olympic bar & plate set | $180.47 |
| UV13703 | 300 lb rubber Olympic set | $208.26 |
| UV13704 | 310 lb coloured rubber Olympic set | $250.99 |
| UV81241 | 45° preacher curl bench | $518 |
| UV81240 | 45° arm extension | $518 |
| UV80874 | 45° linear leg press | $840 |
| UV81494B | 3D Smith machine | $1,076 |
| UV81313 | Cable cross-over / jungle station | $2,200 |
| UV81321 | Five-station multi gym | $2,600 |
| UV81316 | Eight-station multi gym | $3,800 |
The jump from $4.53 to $3,800 across one catalogue is why store format matters more than product taste. A kiosk cannot carry UV81316; a warehouse-format store should, because eight people can train on it simultaneously and nothing else in your inventory demonstrates capability the way assembled steel does.
Block 2: Freight — calculate it from carton data, not from a percentage
Freight is where new importers lose money, because they apply a flat percentage to FOB value. Carriers charge on chargeable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Two real carton specifications show how differently the same dollar of goods behaves:
| SKU | Carton data | Volume | Rough units per CBM (estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV11101 10 kg set | 20 sets per carton, 101 × 87 × 98 cm, 11 kg | ≈ 0.86 CBM per carton | ≈ 23 sets per CBM |
| UV43101 band | 5 pcs per colour card, 40 × 28 × 28 cm | ≈ 0.031 CBM per card | ≈ 159 pcs per CBM |
What those two numbers mean in practice (all figures below are illustrative estimates, not a quotation):
- A 40 ft high-cube container is commonly planned at roughly 65–68 CBM of usable volume. On UV11101 that translates to roughly 1,500–1,580 sets, worth around $16,000–$17,300 in indicative FOB value — before considering the container payload weight limit.
- On UV43101 the same volume would theoretically hold around 10,000–10,800 pieces, worth roughly $11,000–$12,200 in indicative FOB value — but here the weight limit and practical handling usually bite long before volume does.
- Conversely, light bulky goods such as yoga mats tend to run out of volume first. If you plan to import UV21001 TPE mats or UV20801 EVA mats, ask for carton dimensions and pieces-per-carton during quotation, because a mat-heavy container will cube out long before it weighs out.
Three practical rules follow. Always request carton dimensions and pieces-per-carton for every SKU before finalising quantities. Mix at least one dense anchor — dumbbell and barbell sets such as UV11101, UV11302, UV13705 — into any container of bulky light goods. And get landed-cost quotes rather than freight rates, so duty, terminal charges and last-mile delivery are inside the number you actually budget for. As a rough planning allowance, duty plus clearance plus inland delivery is often treated as a double-digit percentage of FOB value, but the rate depends entirely on your country and HS classification — confirm it locally.
Block 3–7: The non-inventory costs
These vary too much by market for a supplier article to state responsibly. Model them as ranges from local quotations:
| Block | What to collect | Why it breaks budgets |
|---|---|---|
| Rent & deposit | Monthly rent, months of deposit required, utilities, insurance | Deposits consume cash before the first sale |
| Fitout | Flooring, lighting, racking, display plinths, signage, POS | Heavy equipment needs reinforced flooring and wide aisles |
| Staff | Wages × headcount × months of pre-launch and runway | Payroll starts before revenue does |
| Launch marketing | Local ads, opening event, marketplace listing costs | Often cut first, and usually needed most |
| Working capital | Several months of fixed costs plus re-order capital | Re-orders must be funded before the first container sells out |
The pattern in every failed store opening is the same: the entire budget went into the first container, and there was nothing left to run the shop for the three months it takes to sell through it.
Three store formats: purchase lists and budget ranges
All quantities below are illustrative planning quantities, extended at the indicative FOB prices above. Confirm per-SKU MOQ — the site-wide baseline is 1,000 pcs, while some SKUs carry their own minimum (UV61501 and UV13101 at 500 pcs, UV21108 at 1,004 pcs). Freight, duty and all non-inventory costs are excluded.
Format A — Small format / marketplace-first (up to ~80 m² or online-led)
| Model | Indicative qty | Unit FOB | Extended (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV43101 | 1,000 | $1.13 | $1,130 |
| UV20801 | 1,000 | $1.48 | $1,480 |
| UV61501 | 500 | $3.44 | $1,720 |
| UV40627 | 1,000 | $3.71 | $3,710 |
| UV70118 | 1,000 | $2.98 | $2,980 |
| UV71301 | 1,000 | $0.80 | $800 |
| UV11101 | 200 | $10.94 | $2,188 |
| UV11302 | 200 | $11.91 | $2,382 |
| UV11402 | 200 | $4.53 | $906 |
| UV61001 | 100 | $17.19 | $1,719 |
| UV13705 | 10 | $180.47 | $1,805 |
| Subtotal | ≈ $20,820 |
Add quote-based lines (UV21001 TPE mats, UV13101 kettlebells, UV10201 neoprene dumbbells) and the realistic first-purchase band lands around $20,000–$30,000 FOB — illustrative estimate. This is the lowest-risk entry point: dense, fast-moving goods, small-ticket units and no assembled machinery.
Format B — Mid-size retail with a strength demonstration area
| Model | Indicative qty | Unit FOB | Extended (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV43101 | 2,000 | $1.13 | $2,260 |
| UV20801 | 2,000 | $1.48 | $2,960 |
| UV61501 | 1,000 | $3.44 | $3,440 |
| UV40627 | 2,000 | $3.71 | $7,420 |
| UV70118 | 2,000 | $2.98 | $5,960 |
| UV71301 | 2,000 | $0.80 | $1,600 |
| UV50704 | 1,000 | $1.56 | $1,560 |
| UV70709 | 1,000 | $2.37 | $2,370 |
| UV11101 | 500 | $10.94 | $5,470 |
| UV11302 | 500 | $11.91 | $5,955 |
| UV11402 | 500 | $4.53 | $2,265 |
| UV11201 | 300 | $12.23 | $3,669 |
| UV61001 | 300 | $17.19 | $5,157 |
| UV61202 | 100 | $40.00 | $4,000 |
| UV21727 | 100 | $36.72 | $3,672 |
| UV32205 | 200 | $16.25 | $3,250 |
| UV13705 | 30 | $180.47 | $5,414 |
| UV13703 | 20 | $208.26 | $4,165 |
| Subtotal (goods) | ≈ $70,587 | ||
| UV81494B | 2 | $1,076 | $2,152 |
| UV80874 | 1 | $840 | $840 |
| UV81321 | 1 | $2,600 | $2,600 |
| UV81241 | 1 | $518 | $518 |
| UV81240 | 1 | $518 | $518 |
| UV81471 | 2 | $240 | $480 |
| Subtotal (machines) | ≈ $7,108 | ||
| Total indicative FOB | ≈ $77,700 |
With quoted mat and kettlebell lines added, plan a band of roughly $80,000–$100,000 FOB — illustrative. This format is where most profitable independents sit: enough assembled equipment to demonstrate credibility, enough small goods to keep the till moving.
Format C — Warehouse / commercial project supply
| Model group | Indicative spend | Representative models |
|---|---|---|
| Small goods & accessories | ≈ $65,240 | UV43101 5,000 pcs, UV20801 5,000 pcs, UV61501 2,000 pcs, UV40627 5,000 pcs, UV70118 5,000 pcs, UV71301 5,000 pcs, UV50704 2,000 pcs, UV70709 2,000 pcs |
| Sets & light weights | ≈ $60,607 | UV11101 1,000, UV11302 1,000, UV11402 1,000, UV11201 600, UV11001 600, UV11104 500, UV10906 500 |
| Functional & recovery | ≈ $39,190 | UV61001 600 pcs, UV61202 200 pcs, UV32205 400 pcs, UV21727 300 pcs, UV41907 1,000 pcs |
| Olympic & barbell sets | ≈ $40,920 | UV13705 60 sets, UV13703 40 sets, UV13704 20 sets, UV13904 200 sets, UV13905 200 sets |
| Machines | ≈ $26,216 | UV81494B ×4, UV80874 ×2, UV81313 ×2, UV81321 ×2, UV81316 ×2, UV81241 ×2, UV81240 ×2, UV81471 ×4 |
| Total indicative FOB | ≈ $232,000 | Excluding quote-based lines |
Allow roughly $15,000–$25,000 additional (illustrative) for quote-based lines such as UV21001 mats, UV13101 kettlebells and UV10801 / UV10601 dumbbell runs, and you are planning a startup inventory around $250,000 FOB — illustrative estimate. This format only works with commercial and project customers in the pipeline, not walk-in traffic alone.
Turnover: the number that decides whether you can fund the second container
Inventory is not a cost; slow inventory is a cost. Apply this thinking per tier:
- Sub-$4 lines (UV43101, UV20801, UV61501, UV40627, UV70118, UV71301) should turn several times a year. Their per-unit commitment is low, so holding a deep position is cheap relative to their shelf impact.
- Sets and mid-price lines (UV11101 through UV11201, UV61001, UV13605/UV13606) should be re-ordered against observed sell-through. Because UV11101 ships 20 sets per carton, buy to carton multiples and avoid breaking packs unnecessarily.
- Machines (UV81494B, UV81321, UV81316, UV81313) are either sold to a committed customer or held deliberately as floor demonstrators. Never tie up more than your stated plan in display machines.
Margin structure is your own calculation: take the landed unit cost and apply your own retail multiples. Any illustrative margin example would depend entirely on your channel, freight and local tax — model it yourself and stress-test it before ordering.
How to cut the cost of the first purchase
- Use free samples to avoid buying the wrong thing. UnivFitness supplies free samples with the cost refunded against the bulk order. Sample before you commit to a four-figure machine.
- Pool MOQs. The baseline MOQ from 1,000 pcs is reachable across a mix; ask us to structure your first order so every line clears its minimum.
- Phase the machines. Open with UV81494B ($1,076) and UV80874 ($840) as demonstrators, and add UV81316 ($3,800) when a customer commits.
- Plan to CBM. Put dense goods such as UV11101 sets in the same container as bulky mats.
- Brand early. With OEM custom colours, logo and private-label packaging, even a $1.13 band becomes a branded line. Use `mould` logos on cast iron and painted goods such as UV11101, and `1C printing` on latex and soft-surface goods such as UV43101 and UV61501.
- Document everything. Each order carries an inspection report; keep it for warranty and resale.
